exhibition: "WY 3208G" in the car
curators: Klara Czerniewska, Norbert Delman
Allegedly, the automobile belongs to the previous epoch – the one which is significantly dubbed as Fordist. However, many of us are still tightly bound up with our four wheels. The car symbolizes our sense of freedom and independence, our social status and also the rational comfort of moving from one place to another. Only 30% of car parts are said to be responsible for its ability to move. The rest is there to provide comfort and safety.
The ride is an extension of our crib. And even of ourselves. Old rags and zines in the trunk which did not make it to the parent’s place. Empty jars collected and transported to be filled up in the ‘burbs by your mom. The steering wheel sticky from your moisturizing hand cream. The mats covered with dry leaves, lunch leftovers, lost hair and bitten nails. Not to mention the CDs put in the wrong sleeves. All of this defines the personality of the users – be it the driver or the passenger.
Having a car of your own makes up for a perfect exhibition space, especially when you’re young and ambitious and don’t want to wait until someone from the established art world discovers you. And the car, as a symbol, can be endlessly reinvented and reinterpreted – just think about all those cliches from contemporary art and popular culture.
The steering wheel, the trunk, various recesses, mirrors, backrests and bolsters, windshields and protective screens, numerous other accessories as well as the built-in soundsystem will be adapted, transformed and incorporated into specific art installations by artists invited by Norbert Delman. Each of them was allowed to create anything as long as the car will still maintain its original function after this ephemeral event, taking place in various locations around Warsaw.
