Melancholic Squatter is a sculpture prepared for the ‘Slav Squatting’ exhibition. The posture itself originates from the post-Soviet suburbs, but it quickly conquered the Internet and the minds of subsequent generations alike through its simple but catchy form, combining Buddhist meditation with the rebellious style of the street. In his work, the artist is referring to his youth in Warsaw’s neighborhoods during the 90s. ‘This work is a post-apocalyptic vision of the world, in which we look back with melancholy and sentiment at the times when sitting on benches and walls among grey blocks of flats defined us as a generation and built a culture – not only a visual one – to which we reach so consciously today,’ says the artist.
